The benefits of taking Acitretin (Soriatane):soriatane.com:"Severe psoriasis can cause burning, itching, pain and overall discomfort. It can also interfere with daily functioning and cause emotional distress. If you have severe psoriasis, it can be difficult to find a treatment that really works. Topical treatments don’t always work. They are also not indicated for severe psoriasis and can be quite messy. Light therapy is often inconvenient and sometimes ineffective. In addition, some drugs may have unpleasant side effects, like nausea, that interfere with day-to-day life. That’s why you should talk to your dermatologist about Soriatane®‚ (acitretin). This convenient, once-a-day drug has been clinically proven to treat severe cases of plaque, pustular or erythrodermic psoriasis. Soriatane‚ (acitretin) can help."

Acitretin (Soriatane) description:medlineplus:"Acitretin (a-si-TRE-tin) is used to help relieve and control severe skin disorders, such as severe psoriasis. It works by allowing normal growth and development of the skin. Acitretin may continue to work after you stop taking it, but usually after a time, the skin condition returns and you may need to begin taking it again. Acitretin must not be used to treat women who are able to bear children unless other forms of treatment have been tried first and failed. Acitretin must not be taken during pregnancy because it causes birth defects in humans. If you are able to bear children, it is very important that you read, understand, and follow the pregnancy warnings for acitretin. You must take important precautions while taking acitretin and continue with them for a period of time after you stop taking the medicine . The precautions are: Women should not become pregnant and should use two methods of very effective birth control. The birth control methods should begin 1 month before starting the medicine and continue for at least 2 or 3 years after discontinuing the medicine or as directed by your doctor. Men and women should not donate blood for transfusion purposes during treatment and for 2 or 3 years after discontinuing the medicine or as directed by your doctor. Men and women should not drink alcohol during treatment and for 2 months after discontinuing the medicine"

Who should NOT take Acitretin (Soriatane):ahealthyme:"Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have diabetes; have high cholesterol or triglyceride levels (a type of fat) in your blood, or if you have a family history of this; drink alcohol; have kidney disease; or have liver disease. You may not be able to take acitretin, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above. Do not take acitretin if you are pregnant or if you are planning a pregnancy in the next 3 years. Acitretin is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that acitretin will cause birth defects in an unborn baby. You must take a pregnancy test and have negative results, and use effective birth control for 1 month before starting your therapy with acitretin. Therapy can begin only on the second or third day of your next normal menstrual period. Also, you will need to use two reliable forms of birth control during your therapy with acitretin and for at least 3 years following the end of your therapy. It is not known whether acitretin passes into breast milk. Do not take acitretin without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby."

Things to consider before taking Acitretin (Soriatane):medformation.com:"In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For acitretin, the following should be considered: Allergies—Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual reaction to acitretin, etretinate, isotretinoin, tretinoin, or vitamin A-like preparations, including vitamin A supplements. Also tell your health care professional if you are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives, or dyes. Diet—Make certain your health care provider knows if you are on any special diet, such as a low-sodium, low-cholesterol, or low-sugar diet. Discuss with your doctor how often you drink alcohol, even if it is only an occasional drink. Pregnancy—Acitretin must not be taken during pregnancy. It has been shown to cause serious birth defects and other problems in humans. Before taking this medicine, make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or if you may become pregnant. Beginning at least 1 month before you start to take acitretin, you should plan on using two effective forms of birth control to prevent pregnancy . In addition, since it is not known how long pregnancy should be avoided after treatment stops, you should plan not to become pregnant for at least 2 or 3 years after you stop taking acitretin or as directed by your doctor. If you become pregnant, stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor"

If the response to the drug is unsatisfactory after four weeks and there are minimal side effects, the dose may be increased by your doctor, depending on your condition and body weight. Onset of Effect It may take two to three months to attain the full therapeutic benefit of acitretin. Duration of Action Unknown. Dietary Advice Acitretin is best taken with the main meal of the day"

Acitretin (Soriatane) drug interactions:mayoclinic:"Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together, even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are taking acitretin, it is especially important that your health care professional know if you are taking any of the following: Alcoholic beverages -- Drinking alcohol may convert acitretin to a much longer-acting product that can stay in the body 60 times longer than acitretin does. This may result in a greater chance of developing side effects for months or years, depending on how much and how often one drinks. This unusual effect can occur even after you stop taking acitretin, especially for the first 2 months after you stop taking this medicine Cyclosporine (e.g., Sandimmune or Neoral) or Hydantoins, such as phenytoin (e.g., Dilantin) -- Acitretin may increase the effects of these medicines Etretinate (e.g., Tegison) or Isotretinoin (e.g., Accutane) or Tretinoin (oral) (e.g., Vesanoid) or Tretinoin (topical) (e.g., Avita, Renova, or Retin A) or Vitamin A, including vitamin supplements -- Etretinate, isotretinoin, and tretinoin are not used together with acitretin; problems in skin, vision, and bone may be more likely to occur when they are used at the same time. If vitamin A is taken with acitretin, the dose of vitamin A should not exceed the minimum recommended daily allowance (RDA) Methotrexate -- Acitretin may increase the chance of causing liver problems if used with methotrexate Oral contraceptives, progestin-only (e.g., Micronor) -- Acitretin may prevent progestin-only oral contraceptives from working properly and may result in an unplanned pregnancy. This does not occur with oral contraceptives containing both estrogens and progestins Tetracyclines -- Using acitretin at the same time that tetracyclines are used may increase the chance of severe pressure occurring in the brain "

Acitretin (Soriatane) contraindications and warnings:Roche Laboratories Inc:"Soriatane must not be used by females who are pregnant, or who intend to become pregnant during therapy or at any time for at least 3 years following discontinuation of therapy. Soriatane also must not be used by females who may not use reliable contraception while undergoing treatment or for at least 3 years following discontinuation of treatment. Acitretin is a metabolite of etretinate (Tegison®), and major human fetal abnormalities have been reported with the administration of etretinate and acitretin. Potentially, any fetus exposed can be affected. Clinical evidence has shown that concurrent ingestion of acitretin and ethanol has been associated with the formation of etretinate, which has a longer elimination half-life than acitretin. Because the longer elimination half-life of etretinate would increase the duration of teratogenic potential for female patients, ethanol must not be ingested by female patients either during treatment with Soriatane or for 2 months after cessation of therapy. This allows for elimination of acitretin, thus removing the substrate for transesterification to etretinate. The mechanism of the metabolic process for conversion of acitretin to etretinate has not been fully defined. It is not known whether substances other than ethanol are associated with transesterification."

Things to avoid while taking Acitretin (Soriatane):drugs.com:"Avoid pregnancy during therapy with acitretin and for 3 years following the end of your therapy. Acitretin can cause severe birth defects. Notify your doctor immediately if you think you might be pregnant. Do not take vitamin A supplements during your therapy with acitretin. Doing so could increase side effects. Do not donate blood while you are taking acitretin and for at least 3 years following the end of your therapy. Do not drink alcohol while taking acitretin. Alcohol will increase the length of time that acitretin stays in your body, which could be dangerous. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Acitretin may increase the sensitivity of your skin to sunlight. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when exposure to the sun is unavoidable"

Nurses' Station:"The idea for the Nurses' Station Catalog was conceived in 1989. After searching the marketplace in response to customer inquiries, it became obvious that there were no catalogs of this type serving the nursing profession. But there weren't any catalogs at the time offering a range of gifts, clothing, professional items, name badges, shoes and scrubs for nurses. It took two years of hard work to gather samples and put a together a catalog of the most unique and high-quality items for nurses."
